Burn permits may be acquired directly from Central Maine Highlands Fire & EMS District #1 Station.
  • Enter District Headquarters at 10 Bridge Street in Howland and request a Burn Permit from the Duty Officer. 
  • Permits are issued from 8:30 AM to 1 PM.
When is a Permit Needed?  Some examples are:
  • Individuals seeking to conduct open burning of piles or broadcast (area) burns up to 10 acres.
  • As of October 2023, permits are required for all fires greater than 3'x3', regardless of whether they were previously considered "recreational"
Information you will need:
    • The physical address where the burn will occur and material being burned.
    • A printed copy of the permit, or the ability to show it on a mobile device
